Flagfest is the time of year that Spencer, Iowa celebrates our country and our flag. It will be held on June 12th, 13th & 14th

The following is the 2009 Schedule 

Friday, June 12
ALL DAY: Annual Display of Veterans Memorial Flags - Clay County Courthouse Courtyard 

8AM- Junior Golf Tournament - Spencer Municipal Golf Course

Youth golf tournament for ages 7-18. Pre-registration is required. For more information contact the Spencer Chamber of Commerce (712) 262-5680

6:00 PM -Flagfest Hike 'n Bike - start at Oneota Park -- 420 10th Ave SE

          Sponsored by :  Spencer Chamber Tourism Committee.  Family event - bring your bikes or hike along.  Treasure hunt for children; along the trail will be music and surprises for all.  Everyone is invited to attend young and the young at heart will have a great time.
          

  6:30 till dark - Private Garden Tour - Start at Westview Memorial Park
              Sponsored by:  Federated Garden Club
              From 5 to 10 private homes will open up their gardens to the public.  List of gardens will be given out at Westview Memorial Park.         

Saturday, June 13

All Day- Annual Display of Veterans Memorial Flags - Clay County Courthouse Courtyard

7:30AM- Bird Walk and Nature Hike - Stolley Park

Prairie Lakes Audubon Chapter sponsors.
Join a group of early birds for a stroll along the trail at Stolley Park. Bring binoculars.
 

8AM- Flagfest Parade Line-up begins - Clay County Fairgrounds East Gate

Beat the rush and line-up for the Parade early!

9 AM - Spencer Family YMCA Kids Fun Run - Spencer Family YMCA
           1Free 8 block fun run for kids K-6 for T-shirts, medals & treates. For more information contact:  Megan Whitaker at 712-262-3782

9:30 AM - Flagfest Welcoming Reception - Spencer Hospital Grand Ave. Park
            Sponsored by:  Spencer Hospital & Avera Health-Spencer Family Care
            Join us for the weekend kickoff at Spencer Hospital Park featuring
            a free light breakfast of coffee, juice and muffins.  Everyone is Welcome

11AM- Flagfest Parade

11AM-11PM- Concession Area - West 5th St

Vendors will be present with ice cream, smoothies, mini donuts, etc. low prices; affordable for the whole family.


1PM-4PM- Mini Train Rides - West 5th St        
Free train rides for the little kids - parents may sit in the shade and watch their children.
 
1PM - 5 PM - Inflatibles - West 5th St. & 2nd Ave. West        

          Inflatibles for all ages!  Free to the Public.  Enjoy the Knights & Dragons
          Bounce N' Slide, BMX Extreme Slide, Adrenaline Rush Obstacle Course,
          Bugs Life Kid's Obstacle Course, Rock N' Roll Joust, and the Bungee Run

1PM-5PM - Shayla Bee Free Coloring Contest - NE corner of Courthouse lawn
           Sponsored by:  Shayla Bee Fund
            Free Coloring contest for age groups:  2-4 yrs, 5-7 yrs, 8-11 yrs. & Adult - 
            Bikers.  Winners will BEE announced at 5:30.  Our awareness booth will
            Bee open until 7:00 PM.  Free Shayla Bee tattoos for all coloring 
            entrants.  Free Shayla Bee t shirts will also Bee for sale.  Free Hot Rod
            Rides or Two-Headed Car rides for all 1st., 2nd. & 3rd place winners and
            their families.  The Shayla Bee Fund is a local organization that helps
            area families with a child in medical crisis.  In memory of Shayla Kaye
            Rohrbough of Spencer.

1 PM - Spencer Jaycee's Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament - East Leach Park
            Spencer Jaycee's will be hosting an Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament at the sand volleyball courts in East Leach Park.  Teams are to have 6 people - entry fees are $60 per team if registered before Sat. June 6th and $75 per team after June 6th.  Registrations forms may be found at Jake's in South Spencer or the Spencer Chamber of Commerce.  All proceedsto benefit the Shayla Bee Fund.  For more information contact Susan Staples at 712-264-8718.

1:30- Sheltered Reality Concert - Courthouse lawn

Sheltered Reality; a drumming group taking a chance to change this world. They are a non-profit organization and have been going now for eight years. They now have many groups in different states, such as New York, Minnesota, Kansas and Michigan. For contact information go to Their Web Site; www.sheltered-reality.org.  BRING YOUR OWN LAWN CHAIR

2 PM - 3 PM - One Room Schoolhouse - Open House & Dedication - 8th St. SE
          West of Riverview Park Aquatic Center. 
          Spensored by:  Spencer Kiwanis Clubs & Spencer Parks Dept.
          Come join us to celebrate the completion of the one room schoolhouse restoration project that was undertaken by the Kiwanis Clubs of Spencer in cooperation with the Spencer Parks Dept.  This renovated one room schoolhouse was moved from Freeman township and now sits in Riverview Park.  It is intended that it be used to preserve the area's one room schoolhouse heritage and for use by school children to learn the environment and history of their forefathers education.  The open house will conclude with a short dedication ceremony transferring stewardship of the building from the Kiwanis Clubs to Spencer Parks Dept.  For more information contact Terry Peterson at 712-580-2946

 

5 PM - 8 PM Spencer Police Dog - fundraiser - West 5th & Grand Ave.
          Spencer Fareway Grocery Store and Clay County Cattlemen will be hosting a fundraiser with the proceeds going to the Spencer Police Department for the new Police Dog.  Stop by and purchase a Ribeye stak sandwich, chips & drink for $6.00.

6:00PM-10 PM- Grand Cruise and Tunes - Grand Ave
Sponsored by: the "Old Iron Company"

A grand gathering of Classic Cars and Trucks.  Listen to music and reminose with the "Old Iron Company" car club.  A great event for old car enthusiests.  Crusie on in and join us.  For more information:  www.oldironcompany.com

8:00 PM - Midnight - Flagfest Street Dance; Parking lot corner of East 1st. Ave.
         and East 7th Street.
                                                                 
         The Flagfest Committee is excited to bring back  a street dance to Flagfest.      Admission to the Dance is FREE. The street dance will feature "The Senders"
         The Senders are Iowa's longest running classic rock n' roll band. 
         Originating in 1962, The Senders have appeared in 7 states throughout
         the mid west, were voted Band of the Year at the original Roof Garden
         in 1967, have recorded 3 CD's, were inducted into the Iowa Rock n' Roll
         Hall of Fame in 2005 and continue to play with two of the original members.
         Bring your lawn chairs and come to enjoy the music and festival garden.

Sunday, June 14
All Day- Annual Display of Veterans Memorial Flags - Clay County Courthouse Courtyard

7AM-Noon- Flight Breakfast and Spencer Air show - Northwest Iowa Regional Airport

Join us for a pancake breakfast June 15 Sunday morning starting at 7:00 AM, watch the air planes fly in from all across the Midwest and at 10:30 Am enjoy the Air show acts, aircraft stactic displays, home built & refurbished aircraft, with us here at the Northwest Iowa Regional Airport at Spencer.
8:00 AM - Dream Team 50K Bike Ride - East Leach Park
         Hosted by the Spencer Dream Team - 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM
         Registration - 8:30 the ride will begin.  Three distances15K, 50K
         75K maps are available at registration.  Post ride picnic free to
         registered participants, Dream Team 50K Bike Ride T-shirts.
         Fee:  Individual - $20 before June 1st. and $25 after June 1st.;
         Family - $35 before June 1st. and $45 After June 1st..  Family
         registration is for immediate household members only & includes
         two adult t-shirts.

10:30 AM- Air Show - Northwest Iowa Regional Airport

12:30 PM -8:30 PM- Free Swim - Spencer Family Aquatic Center
Spencer Parks Department is sponsoring Free Swim at the Spencer Family Aquatic Center - 612 4th St. SE, Spencer, Iowa

1 PM - Spencer Municipal Band - Spencer Bandshell - East Leach Park
           Come out and relax while listening to the Spencer Municipal
            Band.  Bring your lawn chair and listen to the wonderful music.

1 PM - 4 PM - Living History Day at Parker Museum - 300 E. 3rd. St.
               All ages will enjoy demonstrations, refreshments, museum tours, and more at the Parker Museum's Living History Day!  For more information contact

1 PM - 4-H Open Horse Show - Clay County Fairgrounds
               Hosted by the Clay County Conquistadors.

2:00 PM - Daybreakers Kiwanis Toy Duck Race - Riverview Park Aquatic Pool
               Daybreakers Kiwains Club Fund Raiser to benefit area children in need
               Your chance to win great prizes and help make a difference in the live
                of our youth.  See a Daybreaker Kiwanis Member to purchase your duck
