Junior Leadership Applications Now Being Accepted

Spencer High School Juniors will have the opportunity to learn about their community in a special leadership course beginning with the new school year with applications now being accepted at the Spencer Chamber Office.

Junior Leadership Spencer was developed by the Spencer Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Iowa Lakes Community College and with the cooperation of Spencer Community Schools.  The program, modeled from the highly successful Leadership Spencer, is a unique program that involves six half-day sessions for Spencer area high school juniors.

    For 125 years, the Spencer Chamber of Commerce has been a light on the community, providing leadership, advocacy and support to local business to help them grow and prosper.     
   “These efforts are the result of our members and investors, who, through their steadfast support and commitment to community, have created a solid foundation for the Chamber,” said Bill Campbell, Executive Director of the Spencer Chamber of Commerce.  “Every day, our focus   and determination is to improve services to our members ” says Campbell.

Spencer Chamber of Commerce Celebrating 125 Years

It was 1890 that the Spencer Chamber of Commerce came into existence.  In those early years an organization under the title of Spencer Improvement Club was formed with Mr. J.O. Birdsall becoming the first President years later in 1905 and 1906.
Then in 1907 the Spencer Commercial Club was organized with H.J. Buck as its President.  In 1918 the Spencer Commercial Club was located on the 3rd floor of the Grand Opera House Building.  Officers were: President Otto A. Bjornstad; Vice President J.O. Birdsall; Secretary E.S. Perry; and Treasurer P.R. Graham.

Clay County Designated a Home Base Iowa Community

Clay County has officially been designated a Home Base Iowa Community following an effort by many county agencies and organizations. 

With around 300,000 military men and women leaving active service, communities in Iowa are encouraging these retirees to relocate and fill job opportunities matching their skill sets.  Over 100 Clay County businesses have made a pledge to hire returning military veterans if a job opening takes place that matches their skill levels.  In addition, Clay County has developed an incentive package as part of this process including housing and rental assistance, hotel, gas,  food vouchers and much more.
